Confession Time (I was wrong...)

Image
Confession time. A few weeks ago I found out that I was wrong about something. Yeah I know. It shocked me as well. And like so many other stories of book nerdie's (Is that a word?) downfalls... ... this one also includes a book. Let me explain. I've been on social media, and I've seen the book Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir everywhere. Some say it's good, others say it's complex. At first, I was skeptical for two reasons: 1. I am not a sci-fi girlie But most importantly... 2. I am not someone who likes reading heavy and complex things So I did what anyone would do. I asked my Booksta friends. Their responses varied from: "It's pretty good" to "It's pleasant" to "You'll HATE yourself for putting it off" Now I was slightly intrigued. Could I be...wrong? Surely not. Only one way to find out. I picked up the book. Started. Title, dedication, first page... LET ME TELL YOU. Turns out -contrary to popular belief- Nada can be wron...

The Poem 1.      Do not go gentle into that good night, 2.      Old age should burn and rave at close of day; 3.      Rage, rage against the dying of the light.   4.      Though wise men at their end know dark is right, 5.      Because their words had forked no lightning they 6.      Do not go gentle into that good night.   7.      Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright 8.      Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, 9.      Rage, rage against the dying of the light.   10.   Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, 11.   And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, 12.   Do not go gentle into that good night.   13.   Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight 14.   Blind eyes could blaze like ...

Guilt trip

I love you I swear I do But I hope you would stop with the guilt trip, to be honest too I don’t want to upset you I don’t see why to But you’re thinking of the time you were a girl too We don’t agree on the same things though, I don’t understand why won’t you I know you sacrificed a lot for me I know I swear I do But when we don’t agree This horrid feeling bites at me  This, this being of atrocity spreads through me like I’m the most awful human to grace Earth I want to please you But I also want to be me You add this unbearable pressure to my soul But everyone’s born with one like you But at the end of the day I still love you     - Nada k

Of Mice and Men- Section 2

Image
Summary: George and Lennie arrive at the ranch bunkhouse and are greeted by Candy, an aging "swamper" who has lost his right hand. George and Lennie are assigned to one of the grain teams, and George berates Lennie for having spoken up. Candy leaves to prepare wash basins for the men who will soon return from the fields, and George warns Lennie to steer clear of Curley, as fighting the "bastard" will likely cost them their jobs. Curley's wife, a pretty, heavily made-up woman with a nasal voice, appears and flirts with the two men and Slim, the skilled mule driver. Slim tells her that Curley has gone into the house, and she hurries off. Lennie, suddenly frightened, complains that he wants to leave the ranch, but George reminds him that they need to make some money before they can buy their own land and live their dream. The men are joined by Carlson, another ranch-hand, who asks about Slim's dog, which has just given birth to nine puppies.  Carlson suggests t...

Of Mice and Men- Exam style question, Section 1

How do I structure my answer? To obtain full marks on the character or motif question you must write 3 paragraphs. Their instruction is something like this: P- point: answer the question. E- Evidence: quotation (proof to your point) E- Explain: how does your proof back up your point? D- Language devices used in quotation. + - How does the reader feel?   What's the writer's intention? How does this link to the question?   How does the writer present the characters of Lennie and George in section 1? Model answer Lennie- The writer presents the character of Lennie as child-like in section one. This is evident in the quotation, " 'Look George. Look, what I done' ". This indicates that Lennie is eager to catch George's attention in order to show him what he has done, and receive validation. The use of the repetition of the word "Look" suggests there is a sense of operation in Lennie's words, as he wants George to pay attention to him. This may sug...

Is Social Media as Bad as it Seems?

The term ‘Social Media’ has only been around since the 1990s. And perhaps because the term is so young, we talk about it like it's a very recent phenomenon, something that we can just turn on and off with a switch. But social media is much deeper. It began the day our ancestors began wandering across the continents 100,000 years ago, and has been expanding in lockstep with our dense networks of transportation, energy and communications that connect all the continents, nations, cities and communities of the world.   Social media has withstood every pandemic, every world war, the Crusades and financial crises. And if you look at the continuous expansion in the flows of people, of technology, of capital, of data, you can only conclude that social media is just getting warmed up. So let's not even begin to debate whether or not globalization is our future.   Do you remember the so-called anti-social media protests of the late 2012s and early 2013s? Back then, the protesters ...
