How does the writer present the characters of Lennie and George in section 1?
Model answer
Lennie-
The writer presents the character of Lennie as child-like in section one. This is evident in the quotation, " 'Look George. Look, what I done' ". This indicates that Lennie is eager to catch George's attention in order to show him what he has done, and receive validation. The use of the repetition of the word "Look" suggests there is a sense of operation in Lennie's words, as he wants George to pay attention to him. This may suggest to the reader that Lennie is very dependent on Geoge and their relationship resembles that of a parent and child.
George-
The writer introduces George as responsible through the opening section of the novel. This can be proven in the quotation " 'Lennie, you gonna be sick like you was last night". This implies that George has a caring nature and wants to ensure that Lennie is feeling well, and does not become ill again. The use of direct address in this sentence, "You" created a sense of urgency for the reader and implies that Lennie must listen to George immediately George has created a warning for Lennie, which suggests that he is in charge.
